Erratum: Fast point-feature label placement for dynamic visualizations

چکیده
Received: 19 June 2007 Revised: 28 September 2007 Accepted: 10 February 2007 Abstract This paper describes a fast approach to automatic point label de-confliction on interactive maps. The general Map Labeling problem is NP-hard and has been the subject of much study for decades. Computerized maps have introduced interactive zooming and panning, which has intensified the problem. Providing dynamic labels for such maps typically requires a time-consuming pre-processing phase. In the realm of visual analytics, however, the labeling of interactive maps is further complicated by the use of massive datasets laid out in arbitrary configurations, thus rendering reliance on a pre-processing phase untenable. This paper offers a method for labeling point-features on dynamic maps in real time without pre-processing. The algorithm presented is efficient, scalable, and exceptionally fast; it can label interactive charts and diagrams at speeds of multiple frames per second on maps with tens of thousands of nodes. To accomplish this, the algorithm employs a novel geometric de-confliction approach, the 'trellis strategy,' along with a unique label candidate cost analysis to determine the 'least expensive' label configuration. The speed and scalability of this approach make it well-suited for visual analytic applications. Information Visualization (2007) 6, 249--260. doi:10.1057/palgrave.ivs.9500163

متن کاملA fast and practical grid based algorithm for point-feature label placement problem
Point-feature label placement (PFLP) is a major area of interest within the filed of automated cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), and computer graphics. The objective of a label placement problem is to assign a label to each point feature so as to avoid conflicts, considering the cartographic conventions. According to computational complexity analysis, the labeling problem has b...
متن کاملFast Point-Feature Label Placement Algorithm for Real Time Screen Maps
The generation of good label placement arrangements is a frequent problem when producing maps. The objective of a good label placement is to display the geographic position of the features with their matching label in a clear and harmonious fashion, following accepted cartographic conventions. In this work, we propose the fast algorithm for label placement (FALP) for generation of real time scr...
متن کاملForce-Based Label Number Maximization
We present a force-based simulated annealing algorithm to heuristically solve the NP-hard label number maximization problem lnm: Given a set of rectangular labels, each of which belongs to a point-feature in the plane, the task is to find a labeling for a largest subset of the labels. A labeling is a placement such that none of the labels overlap and each is placed at its point-feature. The abs...
متن کاملAn efficient POPMUSIC based approach to the Point Feature Label Placement Problem
This work, outlined in Alvim and Taillard [1], address the point feature label placement problem (PFLP) which is the problem of placing text labels adjacent to point features on a map so as to maximize legibility. We consider a set of n points, each one with p candidate label positions. A solution S is a list of n labels. For any S, we denote by f(S) the function that counts the number of point...
